Life Is What Happens To You While You’re Busy Making Other Plans
Has “life” happened to you?
My story here begins in 2002 when I quit my steady and comfortable J-O-B as a Technical Project Manager in New York City to open and operate my first brick-and-mortar bookstore. I was single, young and full of ambition. Life was good… Had my own apartment in midtown NYC, nice brand new sporty convertible and a great circle of friends.
So why did I take the plunge into entrepreneurship? Well it went something like this…
I was tired of spending an hour each day commuting back and forth to my J-O-B only to spend the day stuck in meetings, doing the same things over and over, playing phone tag, reading and writing tons of emails and trading my time for dollars to make someone else wealthy. I was frustrated from working hard only to get a salary increase that barely surpassed the yearly inflation rate for living expenses. The only way to get a sizable boost in my income was to get a raise or change jobs. My work day ended going back home exhausted, with no energy or time left to spend with my friends and family. Oh… and the next day the same routine repeated itself…
I started asking myself… Do I live to go to work, or do I work to live life?
That was how I felt back then. I didn’t feel in control of my life and had so much more to give. I had a burning desire for a change in my life and to take control of it. Like most people, I took the traditional route and went to college to get a degree and then went straight into the corporate world. That was the safest thing to do. Right? That's what we are taught to do anyway... But the entrepreneurial bug had bitten me a long time ago since I was a kid.
Is Your Daily Grind Getting You Where You REALLY Want To Be In Life?
I was never afraid to take risks and explore new ideas or business models. Throughout my childhood, I was constantly selling something to my friends growing up in the Dominican Republic. I sold homemade candy and ice popsicles to my friends when I was 14. After winning a kite competition at age 15, I started making and selling custom kites. In college, I owned and operated a college textbooks online/offline listing service called Collegiate Classifieds (before Barnes & Noble and Amazon were selling books online) and later launched my first “official” business, a local desktop publishing company called Consumer Retention Services (CRS) that catered to local small businesses. The feeling of being able to make my own money from something was awesome. But not knowing how to systematically produce the same results, led me to make my efforts more of a hobby than a real business. As I graduated college and went into the corporate world, I always kept my hustle…
